Blind due to a vitamin A deficiency she is part of an educational program run by Helen Keller International. Since the 1980s, HKI has spearheaded efforts with other international partners, host governments and local non-governmental organizations to combat vitamin A deficiency, which affects more than 140 million preschool children and is a public health problem in more than 100 countries. Over the years, HKI has expanded its nutrition program to combat other nutrition and health problems and to promote sustainable, integrated solutions such as homestead gardening, poultry raising, food policy, complementary feeding, and fortification of common foods with essential vitamins.
