PROVINCETOWN,MASSACHUSETTS :Barry Clifford, America's top underwater archaeologist an explorer. In 1984, underwater explorer Barry Clifford and his Project Team discovered the site of the 1717 shipwreck of the Whydah off Cape Cod, the only verified pirate shipwreck ever discovered. The Whydah, built as a slave ship in 1715 and captured by pirate Capt. "Black Sam" Bellamy two years later. The Whydah sank in a ferocious storm off Cape Cod in 1717, killing Bellamy and all but two of the 146 men on board. Using historical research, remote-sensing techniques and underwater surveys, Clifford has been involved in the survey and/or recovery of numerous other shipwrecks. They include more than 50 wrecks around Cape Cod, various 17th and 18th century wrecks in the Indian Ocean, more than 20 wrecks in New York's East River, and others in Florida, the Bahamas, the Bay of Corinth, Boston, Belize and Panama.
